FROM THE HEADMASTER...

We are drawing near to the end of what I am pleased to say has been a busy and fruitful session. There are several important changes regarding the School and in particular to the hostel arrangements. Parents are requested to refer to the letters on these various matters enclosed in the end of term envelopes together with students' reports. Although we must all patiently await the results of the recent Board Examinations, there is ample evidence to suggest that we can be optimistic as to the outcome. The outgoing batch of Class 12s has already left after a grand Farewell at the AVS Club. We are looking forward to receiving the new intake on the 21st April and remind the existing students that they are due back to School on Sunday 20th April.

I am looking forward to the Bihu break next week and I am sure that our hard-working students and staff will also welcome the respite from the very active life that they lead here.

Mr. JOHN'S ASSEMBLY

Mr. Mathew John conducted the first assembly of the term in which he dwelt on the role and relevance of Boarding Schools in the present day context. He spoke on the subject with the usual coherence and clarity and held the students' attention right from the word go! He enumerated the various htmlects of such a system both from the points of view of parents and students. He said, "A good residential school offered varied learning opportunities: from academics to sports; cultural to literary activities". He also said "a well rounded development of students are assured in residential schools unlike as in the case of day schools". According to him, one of the important facets of being in a residential school is that one learns to live as part of a close-knit community and work together as a team". The above trait is becoming increasingly important nowadays for an individual to become a good and successful citizen of the society. Another area in which students' immensely benefit from being part of such a set-up or system is in developing their critical thinking and decision-making skills. He has been to able to remove from the minds of students whatever little misconceptions or doubts that they had about being in a residential school like AVS, undoubtedly one of the finest!

SCIENCE WEEK

The Science week was celebrated during the first week of March and the science department was abuzz with intense activity.
An exhibition on a grand scale was organised -with the active participation of students from various classes -in which a variety of models were displayed and interesting experiments demonstrated. The innumerable exhibits gave the students a detailed insight into the underlying concepts behind the models and experiments in Biology, Chemistry and Physics. The exhibits in biology ranged from as simple as a display of different seeds to the most complex, the human skeletal system. In the chemistry section there were some interesting experiments like 'Bleeding lemon', 'Burning cotton' that truly captured the imagination of the young minds. In physics, there were some 30-odd models on display that explained the intricate concepts. Students thoroughly relished by being part of such a beehive of activity and carnival like atmosphere that prevailed during the week.
As part of the celebrations, a collage making and a science fiction writing competitions were held that drew enthusiastic response from the students. A lecture on Biotechnology by Mr.Konwar from Tezpur University proved to be very interesting and informative. The enthusiasm of the students for activity-based learning was unleashed in full measure and this augurs well for the future of science at AVS. All students and the teachers - Mrs.Vidya Borah, Mrs.Shakila Banu, Mrs.Shaibi Patrick, Mrs.Vijaya Lakshmi, Mr. Subho Das and Dr. S.Saha - who had organised the celebrations need to be congratulated for their untiring effort.

INTER-HOUSE DEBATE

The first Inter-House debate of this term was held on 19th of February between Nameri and Chakrashila at the WMH. The topic for the debate was: "Religious Fundamentalism Is The Only Answer to Corrupt Liberalism". Nameri spoke for the motion and Chakrashila against the proposition.
The speakers from Nameri were Parul, Bidisha, Sneha and Bitupen while Vibhuti, Rael, Indu and Priyadarshani represented Chakrashila.

Defending the motion, Nameri argued that the adoption of a fundamentalist approach would result in steadfastness to religious beliefs, traditions, greater unity and a feeling of brotherhood that ultimately will translate into lasting peace. Chakrashila dented the opposition's position by arguing adroitly that such a position on the contrary will result in rampant fundamentalism, injustice, disharmony and most importantly widespread hatred. Chakrashila has clearly swept aside the opposition's weak line of defense and took an unassailable lead in the beginning and finally clinched the debate a convincing fashion.

Vibhuti Jaswal was adjudged the best speaker. Parul was awarded the second position and the third position went to Rael Sarmeen.

MANAS ASSEMBLY
Manas Assembly on Bhagat Singh coincided with the Martyrdom's Day of Shaheed Bhagat Singh and the timing could not have been better to pay homage to the legendary freedom fighter to highlight what he stood for, in his short but eventful life. Manas used one of the episodes -of Bhagat's Singh's valiant struggle for better living conditions for the freedom fighters, who had been imprisoned and cooped up in such inhuman conditions during the freedom struggle - to drive home on the necessity of having perseverance when faced with difficulties. Manas has been able to portray the epic saga of Bhagat Singh's 'perseverance' in persuading the authorities to give up their intransigent position and accede to his demand after a prolonged hunger strike lasting for 65 days with such an intensity that it must have inspired the audience to develop this important quality in our life. Navid's presentation and the performance of Abhishek and Pritam really stood out.

'AU REVOIR'

March 28th. It was that time of the year when another batch Class 12 was getting ready to bid adieu to the School. The School on its part arranged a farewell to the outgoing batch befitting the occasion. It is one of the functions of the calendar that was eagerly looked forward to by Class 12s and it truly lived up to the expectations of all in elegance and grandeur in keeping with the finest traditions of the school! The organisers pulled out all stops in putting everything in place with meticulous care. It was also an occasion to demonstrate the organisational skills of Class 11 and they rose to the occasion. By half-past eight as everyone including parents were seated and it was time for a walk down the memory lane with the Head Boy and the Head Girl sharing some nostalgic moments about the School. The Headmaster in his speech thanked the outgoing batch for their contributions to the school and wished them well in future. It was followed by a sumptuous dinner. The school had also given each student something to carry home, a memento on this memorable occasion, which they will cherish in the years to come.

KOPILI ASSEMBLY

If you had thought that west would never meet the east, Kopili has proved us wrong with their assembly. Their skit made us realise on the need to show greater sensitivity when it comes to dealing with the values and cultural practice of others and it is better assimilate the best of all cultures to develop a balanced personality.
The skit ran like this. A girl from a modest background and brought up in a conservative environment becomes the object of ridicule of her elitist mates. On being invited to her friend's house, the haughty classmate mocks at the practice of listening to the Ramayan and eating with bare hands. After being won over by the behaviour of her modest friend, she realises her folly of being insensitive and hypercritical and decides to turn over a new leaf! The roles were well enacted by Shenab, Grace, Parnalekha, Duboree, Serleen, Kinang, Shawon, Sneha, Priya, Bedashree, Jabin, Mrittika, Shezin, Iantha, Khusboo, Sohini, Chimi, and Yanam. Sarah, Rishila and Khezo entertained the audience with the melodious song, "Hero".

Kaushik Talukdar (D82): A Genuine All rounder

It is a great moment for all of us to know that one of our old students, Kaushik Talukdar (D 82) has been selected to represent Mumbai Under 19 Cricket team and has also been registered as a permanent member of the Mumbai Cricket Association and is likely to be considered in the slot of an all rounder in the senior team as well in the coming season, for which he has already started attending the nets.
He has also been selected by the MRF Pace Foundation and signed on by Bombay Gymkhana Club, a prestigious club of Mumbai under a contract to play club league cricket in the coming season.
Currently, he is attached to the ELF Mumbai under the tutelage of Mr. Dilip Vengsarkar, the Chairman, and Talent Hunt Selection Committee of BCCI.
In my view Kaushik has three weapons in his armoury: belief, ability and desire- a potent combination that has made him a truly outstanding cricketer. If you possess enough of one of the above you have a fair chance of being considered as a moderate player; and a reasonable amount of two of will make for a fairly good competitor. But all the three add up to the potential for cricketing success. Kaushik has undoubtedly have all of them and in abundance.

Kaushik started off as a leg spinner and a middle order batsman at The Assam Valley School. But in 1998 cricket season he switched to bowling pace and today he can bowl at a phenomenal speed of 137 kmph. At AVS, as I watched him bowl in the beginning, what struck me first was his self-belief and sincerity towards the game. He had the ability to swing and move the ball besides generating good pace. When it came to batting, he was such a clean striker of the ball, both on the off side and on side making him a genuine all rounder. I still remember the huge sixes that he had hit at the Polo Field during the matches of Inter-School cricket tournament held at Tezpur.
He led the AVS school cricket team in the year of 2000-2001 with lots of victories under his belt that made him the most successful captain in the history of AVS cricket. I am sure that Kaushik will now make the grade to qualify for the West Zone and very soon be in the Under 19 Indian cricket team. I wish Kaushik a wonderful cricket career ahead.

ALL INDIA JUNIOR TENNIS

On 12th of February a group of 15 students accompanied by Mr.Huidrom left for Duliajan to take part in the 18th All India Junior Tennis Tournament. DruboJyoti Deka, Azyan Martin, Pratim Bezbaruah, Jai Singh, Harsh Jain, Arzyaman Boroowa took part in the boys' division. The Girls' team comprised of Persin Bains, Zonovia Masood, Brita Boruah, Swetangana Bhuyan, Shagufta Rahman, Elizabeth Yambem and Sunaina Jaswal. We represented in the Under -12, Under -14 and Under-18 categories.
The competition was fierce as most of the players had the difficult task of playing the top players of the State and some had to battle it out against All India level players but went down fighting. A few made it to the quarter final stage notably Arzyaman, Elizabeth, Sunaina and Shagufta who put up a valiant fight before losing out to better players. All the players came back with a rich experience of having learnt valuable lessons at the tournament. The trip would not have materialised but for the determination and dedication shown by our coach Mr.A.Huidrom.
