I can hardly believe that February is the shortest
month of the year! The School began the new term on full throttle with prospects
of the impending Board Examination high on everybody’s agenda. We enjoyed the
company of a number of visitors, not least of whom was Mr. David Summerscale to
conduct a workshop for Heads of Department, which is all part of our campaign to
keep the initiative in raising academic standard and examination results.
11th February 2002, a wintry morning and there
was an unusual interest for the Monday morning assembly as it was on this day
that the foundation stone of our School was laid. It is a day on which the names
of the new batch of Prefects and also the names of the Head Boy and the Head
Girl are announced. There was a palpable tension in the air as to who all would
make the final grade. A total of 22 Prefects were appointed to look after the
needs of a growing student community.
Before the commencement of the brief and solemn affair the
Headmaster outlined the important role that Prefects play in the day-to-day
functioning and other activities of the school. He also emphasised on the need
of having certain personal qualities that enable them to discharge their
responsibilities and dwelt at length on the need of having personal integrity
and exhorted the Prefects to set personal example and reminded them of the need
to shoulder the responsibilities. The Prefects went on stage to collect their
coveted badges. It was clear from the Headmaster’s announcement that much
thought has gone into the selection of the candidates. There was a thunderous
applause as the names were being announced, clearly indicating that there has
been a great match between the names of the prospective candidates and the final
list!
Making a clean break from the past and to hold the perfects
more accountable morally, they were asked to take an oath of office in public.
There was a good round of applause from the audience when the names- Amitabha
Sutradhar (The Head Boy) and Jaya Basera (The Head Girl) were announced.
Congratulations poured in from all corners. However, the acid test lies in their
delivering the promises and we are sure they would live up to the School’s
expectations!

Q : What does it feel like to be the new Deputy Head of AVS_
A : It’s a big challenge and I always love to face challenges in life. Besides, it is more of an advantage for me being at AVS. I am fortunate
to get students with tremendous potential and members of staff with high qualities as my colleagues.
Q. :
What are the changes you are planning to bring about at AVS_
A : Any change is unavoidable, irrespective of the person in the ‘chair’, if it truly serves School’s interest. I would like to act accordingly so
that the whole School community will benefit. However, in sports, a few changes have been already enforced considering professional
approach, encouraging senior
students for specialization and formation of School teams.
Q. :
What are your plans for bringing permanent coaches to the School_
A. : We have started with Badminton and it’s in process, for other games as well. I think it won’t be cost-effective to have permanent
coaches, rather it
would be better if we give importance to train a sufficient number of interested
students as well as staff.
Q. : After a survey among the students, we found that many feel that morning jogging is a complete waste of time. What about
removing it from the daily
routine_
A. : Morning jogging gets AVS off to a healthy start to the day ahead and maintains a person’s fitness, regardless of whether he or she is good
at sports or not. Personally, I feel it is useful when properly managed and I have no intention to call off morning jogging, but there is a
surprise awaiting you shortly concerning wastage of time. The introduction of training sessions for a particular sports, under strict
supervision, could be one of the suggestions.
Q. :
What are your views on increasing the number of inter-school
competitions_
A. : We are looking forward to having professional School teams for different games to play home and away fixtures which will enable us to
use some of our
wonderful resources.
Q. :
Regarding afternoon classes, it is not turning out to be very effective
due to climatic conditions. What about cancelling them_
A. : Our primary focus for the coming two years will be on the academic side of School life. We primarily timetabled these afternoon classes
for practical, however, it’s not always possible. True, people feel tired after lunch, but I believe not after a working-lunch and we do need
these academic hours to
complete our syllabuses for senior classes when our term time is only seven and
half months.
Q. : Sir, how do you think we can make the extra coaching classes more effective_
A. : We are partially successful in this field, and we are trying to get resource persons and resources for your benefit as well as to train our
staff focusing on recent developments.
Q. :
What do you think of the standard of discipline at this time_
A. : At any hour of the day, on any day of the year, discipline is the first priority in my life. The way I find – you prefects and the senior
students – let all set the very best example in front of the rest of the School. I am sure other people will sense it automatically and it will
minimise the problem. Remember, water flows only in a downward direction. If you want to stop the flow do it at a higher level, not where
it ends.
Q.:
Are you going to cancel senior socials_
A.: This is a co-educational school and we respect friendships, but ‘romance’ is obviously something that we cannot tolerate at AVS.
Nevertheless, senior socials will continue if proper decorum is maintained. In my mind a social is not a ‘jam-session’, it’s truly a training for
socialization in the outside world. But, one thing is sure there won’t be any
social on ‘Diwali’, because it’s not our Indian custom.
Q.:
What about Class 11s giving the Class 12s a farewell_
A.: At the end of the ISC exam., a student of Class 12 does not leave only Class 11s but leaves behind the whole School. So, it would be ideal
to organise a farewell dinner involving all students, staff and parents, but we do not have that infrastructure for accommodating 1000
people.
Q. :
What about expeditions for Classes 9 and above_
A. :
It’s a reward for those who have taken up DoE activities. However,
conducting one in a year for 11s and 12s in future could be discussed.
Thank
you.
Nameri Vs Chakrashila
The topic for the first Inter-House English Debate between Nameri and Chakrashila for the year 2002 was that “Indians Back Home Are Secure, Complacent and Unsuccessful”. Nameri was represented by Sangeeta Sharma (Class 11), Nisha Singh, Rahul Saikia ((both Class 9) and Davish Singh. They debated against the motion.
Chakrashila was represented by Devina Thapliyal, Prajwalita Borah (class 11), Ananya Deori (Class 9) and Deepika Thakur (Class 8). They spoke for the motion. The chairperson for the debate was Jyotsna Chandrani and the Judges for the Debate were Mr. P.P.Sahu, Mrs. Panchali Sahu and Mr. M.P.John.
Contestants of both teams advanced strong points to defend their respective positions and it was a fiercely fought one. Chakrashila emerged victorious. The best speaker award was given to Devina Thapliyal. Prajwalita Borah and Ananya Deori jointly bagged the second position. Well-done Chakrashila!

Nameri Vs Orang
Long ago a boy after wracking his brains discovered something that everyone knew but failed to realise. “Work consists of whatever the body is obliged to do and play consist of whatever a body is not obliged to do”(Mark Twain).
What does it have to do with us_ Well, on the 25th of March an attempt was made to enlighten the students about the importance of homework through a debate.
The Motion stood as: ‘Home Work Is Irrelevant To The Present School System’. Orang and Nameri were represented by three gladiators each: Deval Tibrewalla, Aaakanksha Malhotra and Adarsh Saxena and Farzana Hussein for Orang and Pallavi Gogoi, Wasim Akram, Sneha Sarawgi and Parinita Bardalai from Nameri.
The speakers debated the meaning of homework, its importance and its influence as well as the effect of excessive homework.
The debate was interesting and Nameri fought for the motion with great fervour. However, Orang was more convincing and was adjudged the eventual winners.
Deval Tibrewalla and Adarsh Saxena shared the honours for being the best speakers. Wasim Akram secured the third position.

The Dhansiri Assembly was a unique presentation of its kind in the School. Their adopted theme, ‘The Human body’ may not have sounded great in the first instance but the approach and presentation of the theme was very innovative. Students took turns to speak on a number of interesting facts about human body thereby giving us valuable information pertaining to the subject. It was an eye opener. Next was a skit to create awareness of the various diseases that we might be infected with, if we don’t take care of our body. It stressed on the importance of regular exercise to keep these diseases at bay. The most interesting htmlect of the assembly were the different formations that highlighted their physical agility and stretched their bodies to the limit! It was breath taking and they executed it with great coordination. They made a variety of formations like the human pyramids and wave formations that showed the dexterity of their movements. The feat they performed was enjoyed by all and is attested by the thunderous applause they received. Mr. Patrick and Mr. Sanjay Singh also joined the exercise. Mr. Patrick ended the assembly with a fervent appeal to be more aware of one’s body. I am sure this will inspire us to lead a healthy life from now on!
The Assembly was informative and entertaining. Hats off to Dhansiri Boys for the wonderful performance!

They are the devils in us. They make us weak when we want to be strong. What are they_ They are temptations!
This is what Bhoroli girls tried to prove in the assembly and they did ample justice to the theme. They performed some well-coordinated skits. They showed us how temptations creep in at an early age; how mischief leads to trouble; how the temptation of being glued to the Television affects our academic performance and so on; how overeating and neglecting exercise lead to serious health problems. Radha, Neha, Pankhy, Jaya, Anasuya, Lanu, Aaakanksha, Michelle and some of the other Bhoroli Juniors brilliantly executed these skits. The assembly drove home the message on the need to overcome these with sheer will, lest they affect our life in a variety of ways. We are sure all will pay heed to this and lead a good life.
The Assembly ended with a song by Travis titled “Other Side”, quite a melodious song. To put it in a nutshell it was a very educative and entertaining assembly.

On the 16th evening we entered the WM Hall with great expectations. It was decorated with heart shaped balloons and paper cut outs. There was a soft music played to enhance the ambience and mood of the evening and all were in for a surprise when each one among the audience was handed a red paper heart with numbers printed as part of a lucky draw, slated at the end of the programme.
Unlike other entertainment evenings this one started with a ‘Bharatnatyam’ recital by Mridusmita Das. Then upon the stage were the toddlers of Class 4 and 5 who danced to the tune of ‘Mama mia’. Then the Class 7 performed a breathtaking dance ‘Whenever and wherever’ by Shakira. Next upon the stage were the Class 8 who danced amazingly well to the wacky number “You are my Sonia” and not to forget about the two lovely songs rendered by Bijoya Saha and Parinita. This was followed by a unique idea of having a Lucky draw. There were five lucky winners. Sarah and Kanaliya sang a song in English. It was well sung. Next was a dance by the Class 6 that made the WM Hall even more colourful with the pom poms in their hands. The last item for the day was a group dance ‘Kanch Ki Gudiyan’
The curtains for the programme came down with a small prayer. The entertainment evening surely must have fulfilled the expectations of the audience!
